Born from a desire to bring arresting African stories to the world stage we are on the hunt for raw untapped cinematic voices. We are on a mission to disrupt the conventional African narrative with an authentic contemporary edge and universal stories told through a distinctive African lens. We aim to build a home for tomorrow’s auteurs and their works, supporting them from script to screen. At LAIKA1991 we strive to birth high calibre work, to develop and produce visceral, bold and shameless cinema.
During the 2021 Sundance Film festival, Variety announced the company's international feature co-production "Halo Daze" (written and directed by Sibs Shongwe-La Mer. African pay TV provider multi-choice have acquired the TV/VOD rights for the continent. The ambitious project is the first green-lit feature film endeavour by the young company and serves as a mission statement as well as a genre twisting commercial maturation from the company's co-founder and artist.
With our feet firmly planted in African soil and our sights set on global audiences and untapped markets, LAIKA1991 intends to be the creative powerhouse for fearless storytellers from a new generation eager to mark a mark on world cinema.
